Using Databases for Journal Articles

Why use a database to find a journal article?

  • Allows for searching across journals and other materials arranged around related subjects and themes.
  • Quickly search for items by subject headings or descriptors to allow for more targeted results.
  • Advanced search screens allow for combining multiple search terms using AND, OR, and NOT for better results

Getting started:

  • Use the A-Z Database List to start browsing our databases in alphabetic order.
  • You can also use the Popular Databases and Resources Box on the Website Home page.

Using Primo Search for Journal Articles

To search for articles:

  1. On the Library website homepage the search box is in the center.
  2. The Search Tab will search all the library holdings including articles.
  3. On the search tab enter your search terms and hit search.

Once you have searched you will be taken to the Primo Search System.  From there you should change your scope to Articles as shown in the image below.  You will also want to change the Resource Type to articles to further limit the search.  Remember to apply the filters or they will not be used.

Searching for Peer Reviewed Articles

What is a peer reviewed or scholarly article?

It is an article written by an identifiable expert in the field, for experts in the field, that has undergone a evaluation process to ensure the quality of the research and methodology.

To search for peer reviewed articles:

First make sure that your scope is set to Articles.  Then you will also need to limit your search using the filters to the right, and select Peer Reviewed Journals under Availability.

The Peer Reviewed Articles will be marked with the Peer Reviewed Icon, as shown below.
